Eggs are an excellent inexpensive source of protein available at any grocery store or a farmers market. Selection from a number of choices isn’t always an easy task, especially if you’re unsure what the labels on eggs mean.

For the purposes of clarification, regular or conventional eggs are produced by hens kept it small cages, which are often fed a diet of corn and soy. Conventional eggs usually contain additives that eggs harvested in different ways do not. These eggs are safe to eat, but there are richer options when it comes to nutritional value.

If you would like to improve your heart health, opt for omega 3-enriched eggs. Hens that produce omega 3 – enriched eggs are simply given a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as flaxseed or canola oil.

By consuming omega 3-enriched eggs, you can improve your heart health without consuming mercury, often found in fish we eat as a good source of omega-3 fats.

If you would like to do good by the environment, opt for organic eggs, as hens that produce organic eggs are kept cage-free and given access to outdoor space. These hens are fed a diet free of crops harvested with pesticides, fertilizers, irradiation and genetic engineering, so they are the healthiest option.

When purchasing eggs, make sure you take a good look at the expiry date, and go for clean eggs with uncracked shells.
